Analysis of the Effect of Cooling Media Variations in the Heat Treatment Process on Microstructural Phase Characteristics and Hardness Values ​​of Railway Track Eutectoid Steel

Abstract

Railway tracks have a very hard surface. One way to increase hardness is by heat treatment. Heat treatment is the process of applying heat to a metal material and cooling it with a certain cooling medium with the aim of obtaining mechanical properties according to field needs. This research aims to determine the effect of variations in cooling media in the heat treatment process on the microstructural phase characteristics and hardness values of eutectoid steel materials. The research process was carried out by cutting a sample of eutectoid steel (C=0.920) into 5 specimens, then carrying out a heat treatment process at a temperature of 900℃, then holding it for 30 minutes, then cooling it with various cooling media, namely: air, leaving it in the oven, water, used oil. One of the specimens not subjected to heat treatment will be used as a comparison. The results of observations of the microstructure of eutectoid steel without treatment contain 36% ferrite and 63% pearlite. The resulting microstructure which has the hardest properties in the oil cooling media is the overall martensite microstructure. The results of hardness testing of material that was not heat treated was 333.09 HVN. The heat treated material that has the hardest properties is water cooling media with a Vickers hardness value of 881.09 HVN. This test material can meet hardness standards for railroad applications.
